Former Lincoln City Man Could Cost £100m: Chelsea and Liverpool Watching Closely

Former Lincoln City loanee Morgan Rogers could command a combined £100m this summer as Premier League heavyweights circle.

When Rogers arrived at Sincil Bank on loan from Manchester City in the summer of 2021, there was a sense that we were borrowing potential rather than a finished article. He was raw, direct and fearless, a player capable of electrifying moments but still learning the demands of senior football. Fast forward five years and that potential has hardened into Premier League pedigree.

Morgan Rogers: From Sincil Bank to £100m?

Now 23, Rogers is a central figure at Aston Villa and has been rewarded with a long-term contract running until 2031. His development since leaving Lincoln has been steep and relentless, first impressing at Middlesbrough before earning his big move to Villa Park.

This week, fresh transfer speculation has placed an eye-watering figure on his head. Chelsea and Liverpool are both credited with concrete interest, and Villa’s stance appears firm. A new contract has strengthened their hand, and crucially, raised the asking price.

Reports suggest that it would now take a bid in the region of £100m to prise him away, according to Give Me Sport. That figure reflects not only his age and output, ten goals and five assists this season at the time of writing, but also Villa’s financial landscape as Profit and Sustainability regulations continue to influence decision-making across the division.

For those of us who watched him in red and white, it is a staggering leap. Rogers was always explosive in transition, always capable of driving 40 yards with the ball at his feet, but few would have confidently predicted a nine-figure valuation within half a decade.

Who is interested?

Chelsea’s interest has been described as concrete, with fresh reports suggesting a summer approach is increasingly likely despite Rogers signing a new contract at Villa Park. The forward is said to remain firmly on Chelsea’s radar, and the fact he has strong relationships within the current squad has only intensified speculation. While no formal bid has been made, the noise around Stamford Bridge continues to build, particularly with suggestions that a move is still possible even after his extension.

Liverpool are also understood to be monitoring the situation closely. Previous reporting placed Rogers’ valuation at around £80m before his latest deal, and there is now debate over whether that figure has shifted closer to £100m. The Merseyside club have long been credited with admiration for the 23-year-old, and recent coverage has reiterated that they are “alive” to developments heading into the summer. Any serious move would likely hinge on whether Villa soften their stance or hold firm at a nine-figure demand.

Why the Villa exit?

The reason an exit cannot be ruled out comes down to Villa’s financial framework. Although Rogers is tied down until 2031, the extension reportedly added just one additional year to his previous terms, strengthening the club’s position but not eliminating the possibility of a sale.

Villa have previously had to manage Profit and Sustainability constraints carefully and may still require a significant outgoing to fund squad evolution. In that context, a £100m valuation, as referenced in recent reporting, functions both as protection and as a figure that could become difficult to ignore if the right offer arrives.
