Former Lincoln City loanee Alex Mitchell has admitted he would consider making his move to Plymouth Argyle permanent this summer if Charlton Athletic allow him to leave.
The 24-year-old centre-back has become a key figure for the Pilgrims since joining on loan earlier this season, starting 28 League One matches and establishing himself as a regular in Tom Cleverley’s side.
Mitchell previously spent time with the Imps during the 2023-24 season, gaining further EFL experience as part of a series of loan moves that have helped shape his development. Now, after a strong campaign in Devon, the defender has acknowledged he would be open to extending his stay beyond the current loan.
“It’s a hard one when you are under contract, you want to be respectful,” he said when asked about a permanent move. “I think the lads know I do enjoy it here, everyone can tell.”
Mitchell was always a popular character, someone the fans identified with quickly, and that’s been the case in Devon, as well as Lincolnshire. The defender said he has particularly enjoyed the environment around the Pilgrims, which has made the season a positive one personally.

“I really enjoy it here, like proper. It’s a place where I really enjoy going into work every day.
“The people are top, I don’t think there is a bad egg in the building.”
Despite that, Mitchell accepts the decision may ultimately be taken out of his hands because he remains under contract with Charlton Athletic until the summer of 2027.
“Next year obviously there is stuff you can’t control.
“Charlton kind of hold all the cards at the moment with what they want to do, but if they were to let me go I would definitely really consider it.”
Mitchell was a player I’d have loved us to sign, but we were priced out of a move when Charlton came in. However, he played a bit-part role as the Addicks earned a surprise promotion, and he has certainly settled in the south, which isn’t a surprise, as Plymouth feels like a good club, one that stuck by their manager and are trying to improve by consistency.

The centre-back has certainly benefited from regular football during his time at Home Park, as he did at the Bank. It’s an opportunity has allowed him to grow into a leadership role within the side, a role he always felt he’d grow into while wearing red and white.
With the League One campaign entering its decisive final weeks, Mitchell’s immediate focus remains on helping Argyle finish the season strongly. However, his comments make clear that a longer stay in Plymouth would be something he would seriously consider if the opportunity arises.
