‘The Football Club Makes It World Renowned’ – Jez George on The City of Lincoln

The Imps sporting director, Jez George, has said it is the football club that now makes Lincoln world-renowned.

Speaking immediately after the Imps 4-3 win against Wycombe Wanderers, Jez was asked about coming into the city to work. He and interviewer Michael Hortin both spoke of being from outside the city, but recognising the impact on the community.

Coming from Cambridge, a city known for something else, Jez made a connection that probably those from the inside looking out wouldn’t always make.

“Lincoln and the community couldn’t be more connected,” said Jez on BBC Radio Lincolnshire Red Imps Club.

“It is incredible. I come from a town in the south of England where the university makes it world-renowned.

“This is a city, with no disrespect to the University of Lincoln, where the football club makes it world-renowned. And that’s special because we haven’t got another professional sporting organisation in the city.

“We haven’t got another professional football club within maybe 45 minutes to an hour of the city. And you feel it.

“People might not think this of people in my position, you wear a suit, people don’t know what goes into everything that we do, but you feel it for them and you want to achieve it for them.”

City have hit all sorts of highs this season: 100 points, 100 goals in all competitions, an unbeaten run now stretching to 28 games, and of course, the League One title.

However, it’s not just the numbers that impress Jez, but the method behind them that delivers headlines.

“It’s how we’ve done it is the thing that makes me the proudest. Because it’s just a bunch of 40 or 50 guys who every single day since the start of pre-season have rocked up to work every day, given their all, staff and players.

“To see the look on people’s faces today, it will live with me for the rest of my life. To see grown men crying, to see people coming and shaking your hand and thanking you, it’s so humbling.

“And we do it for the supporters. It might not always appear that, but I promise you we do. And today is the most special day in football I’ve ever experienced”

There is still one more achievement the Imps can take, the overall longest run unbeaten in League One by any team. Luton and City now share the record of 28 matches, but doubtlessly Jez and the staff can be even more proud should we avoid defeat at Port Vale next weekend.
