Lincoln City are reportedly monitoring Plymouth Argyle forward Bim Pepple ahead of the summer transfer window, with competition expected from a number of Championship sides, as per the Daily Mail.
Pepple has reportedly emerged as a target following an impressive first season at Home Park, where he scored 16 league goals and 18 in all competitions after joining from Luton Town. His form has placed him firmly on the radar of clubs preparing for the 2026/27 campaign, including the newly promoted champions. Us.
Pepple has a release clause in his contract, something Tom Cleverley has revealed, which may make him an attractive prospect to suitors, who won’t be involved in a bidding war. However, fellow second-tier sides Norwich City, Portsmouth and Watford are also said to be keeping tabs on the Canadian striker, highlighting the level of competition for his signature, and the likelihood of wages going through the roof, ruling us out.
Interest is not limited to England. Clubs in Major League Soccer and across Europe have also been linked, while Scottish sides Rangers and Celtic are reportedly monitoring both Pepple and Tolaj.
Pepple formed an effective partnership with Lorent Tolaj at Plymouth, with the pair playing a key role in the club’s late push towards the play-off places. He scored against us in February, tormented us more than most forwards and then had to go off injured as we won 4-1, but he certainly caught my eye that day.
Despite a strong run of form in the second half of the season, Argyle narrowly missed out on a top-six finish, remaining in League One for another year. That outcome has increased uncertainty around the futures of several key players, including Pepple.
Pepple’s performances have also brought him into the international picture. The forward received a call-up from Jesse Marsch for Canada’s most recent squad, although he is yet to make a senior appearance. International appearances won’t be a concern for us next season, as we will get those international breaks off anyway.
A rumour worth listening to?
There may be legs in this; there may not, and May 4th is too early to tell. Many clubs stepping up from League One to the Championship base a recruitment strategy around individuals who have impressed in the third tier and are looking to move up. Stylistically, Pepple would suit us, a big centre forward, strong and mobile, but with a good goals return.
There is the Alex Mitchell factor. If Pepple were a target, and if he spoke to people about the club, that would go in our favour. Plus, we’re the darlings of the EFL right now, meaning while many factors around recruitment will work against us (wages, fees, etc.), we will have reputational credit in the bank.
My concern is he’s still a little out of our league. If there is a set release clause, great, but look at Richard Kone, similar to Pepple in that he starred for a promotion-chasing side that didn’t go up in Wycombe, and got a move to QPR. That move was for £5m, more than Pepple is likely to fetch, but also for £7,500 per week. Will that be our ‘going rate’ and, if a team like Norwich get involved, will the wages be higher, given the transfer fee is lower? The report suggests clubs are ready to triple his salary, which could move it to five figures, more than we’re going to be paying players.
I suppose these are the hurdles the recruitment team will spend the summer jumping through.
