Lincoln City have reportedly ‘opened talks’ with Peterborough United midfielder Archie Collins, as reported by SportsBoom.
That’s right, as reported by SportsBoom, which doesn’t have a great track record with getting things right. They’ve previously linked us with Dael Fry, Jake Batty, Aaron Drinan and Shaun Hutchinson, as well as linking Rob Street with QPR.
Still, let’s humour them, right? Collins is the sort of player we might be looking at, and the report suggests head coach Michael Skubala is a strong admirer of Collins.
Championship opportunity could be key
There is allegedly competition for his signature. Leicester City are reported to be monitoring the situation as they look to rebuild following relegation, valuing Collins’ experience at League One level. However, our promotion means we can now offer something equally compelling, immediate involvement in a Championship campaign at Sincil Bank.
Statistically, his most recent season with Peterborough was solid rather than spectacular, returning two goals and seven assists in what was, at times, a challenging campaign for the club. Yet those numbers only tell part of the story. Collins has long been valued for his ability to dictate tempo, link phases of play and contribute consistently across a long season.
His development at Exeter City underlined those strengths. Over six seasons with the Grecians, he became a key figure, helping them secure promotion to League One before earning a move to Peterborough in 2023 for a six-figure fee. During his time with Posh, he also added silverware, playing a role in back-to-back EFL Trophy successes.
Any legs in the rumour?
Maybe, maybe not. I don’t doubt we’re looking for players, and Collins is certainly the type of player I could see us adding to the squad. He’s free, which is nice, having been released by Posh yesterday, and that will surely play a part in the rumour, whether accurate or not.
However, given that he is in the same position as Conor McGrandles, Ivan Varfolomeev and Bayliss, there would be some competition. I’m sure it is a position we will strengthen, as we saw with Kamil Conteh coming in, so it remains to be seen. We will want depth, and we will want players we feel can apply themselves in the Championship, but Collins doesn’t have that experience.
