Former Lincoln City Striker Pens Deal With Defeated Play-Off Finalists

Former Lincoln City striker Callum Morton has penned a deal with Torquay United, a decade after leaving the club.

Born in Torquay, he left his hometown club as a 15-year-old after they disbanded their academy and moved on to Yeovil. He’s had a nomadic career since then and was recently released by Worthing after an unsuccessful short-term stint there.

He’s now back in Jimmy Ball’s squad for the 2026/27 season, one which they’ll yet again spend in the National League South. The Gulls, once a regular fixture on the Lincoln City fixture list, have been in the wilderness of step six since 2023, having dropped out of the Football League in 2014.

This season, they finished third in their division, giving them an automatic place in the play-off semi-finals. They defeated Dorking Wanderers 4-2 in that game, setting up a final against Hornchurch. They twice led against the side which finished second, but were pegged back three minutes into injury time at the end of the game to go to extra time, where Sam Ling bagged a winner for the host, condemning the Gulls to another season in the sixth tier.

Morton came through the academy at West Bromwich Albion after leaving Yeovil and first caught the eye during a prolific loan spell with Northampton Town in 2019-20. The striker scored eight goals in 12 appearances during the Cobblers’ promotion run, including a crucial brace in the play-off semi-final comeback against Cheltenham Town before scoring again in the 4-0 Wembley victory over Exeter City.

Imps’ supporters will remember Morton from his loan spell at Sincil Bank during the 2020-21 campaign. Despite a goal against Bradford early in the season, a shoulder injury stalled his momentum, and he sat out much of the season, only returning in March. He scored in his first game back in our defeat against Fleetwood Town in March 2021, but his role was largely that of an impact option rather than a nailed-on starter. One more goal followed at Sunderland, but he only made 21 appearances for City, scoring three times.

Since leaving West Brom, the 26-year-old has built up experience across the EFL with Peterborough United, Fleetwood Town, Salford City, Forest Green Rovers, Northampton and Bristol Rovers. Injuries restricted his opportunities with the Gas last season, although he still managed to score in a 1-1 draw against Crewe Alexandra in December, before his move to Worthing.
