12 Management Duos From History As Lincoln City Appoint Two Head Coaches

Alan Curbishley and Steve Gritt, Charlton Athletic

Alan Curbishley and Steve Gritt were appointed joint player-managers of Charlton Athletic in 1991, at a time when the club needed stability more than glamour. It wasn’t a match made in heaven: both men applied, and the board couldn’t decide, so split the job.

Their first season almost brought a play-off place, but the years that followed were more modest. Charlton became a mid-table side rather than a promotion force, and by 1995, the club decided to make a change. Gritt left, Curbishley remained, and the more famous part of the story began.

Curbishley went on to become one of Charlton’s greatest managers. He led them to the Premier League through the 1998 play-off final against Sunderland, brought them back up again after relegation, and then established them in the top flight. Because of that, the joint period can look like a preface rather than the main chapter.

The Curbishley and Gritt example is not the sort that gets retold with fireworks and trophies, but it is still relevant. Joint management does not always have to produce an instant defining moment. Sometimes it is a bridge, and Charlton’s bridge led to one of the strongest spells in the club’s modern history.
