Former Sheffield United Trainee Snubs Boston United: Tribunal Will Decide Fee

York City have added to their squad ahead of their return to League Two, with former Sheffield United trainee Frankie Maguire joining from Boston United.

The 22-year-old will officially link up with the Minstermen from July 1, becoming their second signing of the summer after the recent arrival of Mark Shelton from Barnet.

Maguire departs Boston after two seasons with the Pilgrims, having scored 15 goals in 76 appearances during his time at the Jakemans Community Stadium. He joined the club from Sheffield United in the summer of 2024 and became an important figure as Boston established themselves back in the National League.

Despite missing spells of the most recent campaign through injury, Maguire still made a strong contribution, finishing with nine goals and nine assists as Boston secured a top-half finish. His form has now earned him a move back into the EFL, with York preparing for their first season in League Two after a decade away.

Compensation Talks Continue

Because Maguire is under the age of 24 and was offered terms of re-engagement by Boston, the clubs remain in talks over a compensation package. If an agreement cannot be reached, the matter will be settled by an FA tribunal.

That element means the move is not quite as straightforward as a standard free transfer, although York have confirmed the midfielder will join them when his Boston contract expires.

Maguire’s departure represents the loss of a player who had become one of their more productive attacking outlets from midfield for the Pilgrims. His goal return over the past two seasons was notable, particularly given that he was not operating as an out-and-out striker, and his ability to add assists last season made him a valuable part of the Pilgrims’ side.

It is another clear sign of preparation for life back in the Football League for The Minstermen. They ended their long wait for an EFL return last season, and adding proven National League performers appears to be part of their early summer work.

Maguire will now join a York squad looking to make the step up, while Boston will continue discussions over compensation as they prepare for another National League campaign.
