Jon Challinor has made a swift return to Stamford, just days after it appeared his long association with the Daniels had come to an end.
The 45-year-old will remain with the Southern League Premier Division Central club in a player/coach role under new manager Ant Fenton, extending a remarkable connection with Stamford that has already included more than 450 appearances.
Challinor’s departure had only recently been announced, bringing an emotional end to what looked to be 12 seasons at the club. However, in a surprise turn, the popular midfielder is now set to continue at the Zeeco Stadium, with supporters likely to welcome the news after such a lengthy and influential spell.
His career began in the Rushden and Diamonds academy, but it was Stamford who gave him the chance to establish himself in senior football after he was released in 2000. That first spell with the Daniels proved to be the start of a long and varied non-league career, with moves to Cambridge City, Kalamazoo Kingdom and St Albans City before he made a real impact at Aldershot Town and Exeter City, scoring regularly from midfield.
He later returned to Rushden and Diamonds and went on to represent Cambridge United, Forest Green Rovers, Mansfield Town, Brackley Town, Newport County and Kettering Town before joining York City in 2011. His time with the Minstermen brought one of the standout periods of his career, as he helped the club win the FA Trophy and promotion to League Two through the Conference Premier play-offs in 2012, before returning to Stamford the following year.

Stamford Stay Continues
He has also had previous coaching responsibility at Stamford, having taken caretaker charge briefly in 2015. His new player/coach role will now allow him to remain involved on and off the pitch as Fenton begins his tenure.
When his exit was announced at the end of last month, Challinor spoke warmly about his connection with the club.
“It’s difficult to put into words what this club has meant to me.
“From the moment I arrived, Stamford became more than just a football club, it became home.
“I’ve been lucky enough to share so many memories, battles, victories, disappointments and special moments with incredible team-mates, staff and supporters along the way.
“Stamford AFC will always hold a special place in my heart, and I’ll forever be grateful for the journey we’ve shared together.”
Those words suggested a final farewell, but Stamford have now been able to keep one of their most recognisable figures at the club. For a player with almost 1,000 senior career appearances to his name, it is another chapter in a career that has already stretched across more than two decades.
For the Daniels, it also gives Fenton an experienced voice inside the dressing room as the club look ahead to the new campaign.
