A member of the Lincoln City title-winning squad of 2025/26 has secured a League One switch following his release from Premier League side Everton.
Frankie Okoronkwo might have departed in January, but he still played an important role in our title win, grabbing a vital goal that ensured we beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1 at the start of our unbeaten run.
That must have piqued their interest, because despite a failed loan spell in which he picked up an early injury, the attacker has penned a two-year deal at the Keepmoat, ensuring he didn’t remain a free agent for too long.
“I want to get back out as soon as possible,” he said upon completing the move. “I want to get back fit first. From there go from strength to strength, scoring, assisting, playing well and getting wins.”
Okoronkwo played 20 times for the Imps, 13 of those games coming in League One. However, he only started three times, and while he didn’t lack effort, the end product was often absent.
He scored a header against Rovers, but also netted against Barnsley in the EFL Trophy, the two goals coming within days of each other. However, Jack Moylan’s return from injury coincided with Okoronkwo’s absence from the first team, and Everton recalled him just after Christmas.
He scored early into his Rovers’ career, but was injured in his fifth outing against Leyton Orient, and didn’t appear again. Manager Grant McCann had clearly seen something, and he expressed his delight at securing the striker, despite his stifled loan spell.
“Everyone has seen the potential and the quality that he’s got in the time that he did play. Frankie is a young player with so much give, we want to get him to a place where he is playing regularly, he’s scoring, and he’s enjoying it.”
Okoronkwo is Doncaster’s sixth summer signing after Leon Ayinde, James Husband, Neill Byrne, Alfie May and Tommy Simkin.
