Lincoln City One-Hit Wonder Departs Promoted Side

Former Lincoln City midfielder Curtis Thompson has left Spalding United following the end of his contract.

The 32-year-old helped the Tulips secure promotion to National League North, the first time the club had reached step two of the non-league pyramid. His early months were disrupted by injury, but he produced several strong performances during the second half of the campaign.

Spalding have now confirmed he will not be part of their squad for the new season following the expiry of his contract. He becomes the fifth member of the promotion-winning side to move on. Ben Hart has joined Peterborough Sports, while Nathan Fox and Dan Lawlor are also leaving the club.

Spalding are preparing for their first campaign in National League North after a historic promotion, but they will do so without one of the most experienced players in last season’s squad

Curtis Thompson at Lincoln City

Thompson made only one appearance for the Imps, but it came during a difficult and transitional spell in the club’s history. Thompson joined City on a youth loan from Notts County in October 2011, arriving under caretaker-manager Grant Brown after Steve Tilson’s departure.

His only outing came on the same day his move was confirmed, as he appeared as an 88th-minute substitute for Josh O’Keefe in a 2-0 defeat away at Cambridge United. It proved to be a short stay. David Holdsworth was appointed Lincoln manager just three days later, and Thompson’s loan was subsequently cut short.

Although his time at Sincil Bank was brief, Thompson went on to build a solid Football League career. He made more than 80 league appearances for Notts County before moving to Wycombe Wanderers, initially on loan, and later on a permanent deal.

His spell at Adams Park was the most significant of his career. Thompson played regularly for Wycombe in League One, featured in the Championship following their promotion, and was named the club’s Players’ Player of the Year for the 2018/19 season.

He later had spells with Cheltenham Town and Grimsby Town before dropping into non-league football with Spalding United last summer.
