Rotherham United Man Turns Down Deal And Makes Lincolnshire Switch

Boston United have added to their attacking options with the signing of Jack Holmes following his departure from Rotherham United.

The 24-year-old has joined the Pilgrims on an initial one-year contract, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months.

Holmes leaves Rotherham after two seasons with the Millers, having turned down the offer of a new deal following their relegation from League One. He made 56 appearances in all competitions during his time at the New York Stadium, scoring twice.

Those goals came on the final day of last season, when Holmes struck twice in a 3-2 defeat against Wycombe Wanderers. At that stage, he had spoken about wanting to stay with Rotherham and build on a stronger finish to the campaign, but his future has now been settled away from South Yorkshire.

Boston have described Holmes as a versatile performer capable of playing out wide or through the middle as an attacking midfielder. That flexibility gives Paul Hurst and Luke Waterfall another option in the final third as the Pilgrims continue shaping their squad for the new National League campaign.

Lincolnshire Non-League Background

The Leicester-born midfielder’s route into the EFL came through non-league football. After time with Burton Albion as a youngster, he played for Halesowen Town, Hereford and Stamford before earning his move to Rotherham in 2024.

That switch came after he impressed against the Millers for Stamford in a pre-season friendly. He was initially taken on after trial appearances, with then Rotherham boss Steve Evans bringing him into the club as part of the squad for the 2024/25 season.

Holmes found regular starts difficult to come by during his time with Rotherham, with many of his appearances coming from the bench. However, he remained involved across two seasons and was used more frequently towards the end of last term under Lee Clark.

His arrival continues a busy spell of recruitment for Boston, who have also moved to bring in Buxton defender George Ward. The club have also seen forward Kieren Donnelly depart for National League rivals Tamworth.
