Former Lincoln City Coach To Quit Europa League Outfit For Championship Role

Former Lincoln City coach Scott Fry is set to leave Rangers this summer and return to England with Birmingham City, according to the Rangers Review.

Fry only joined the Ibrox club in November, leaving the Imps to become Rangers’ first set-piece specialist under then-head coach Danny Rohl. His move north came after three-and-a-half years with the Imps, where he held roles as first-team goalkeeper coach and later set-play coach.

The report claims Fry will not be part of the backroom structure being assembled by new Rangers manager Derek McInnes, who has already begun reshaping his staff ahead of the new campaign. Instead, Fry is expected to join Birmingham City as they prepare for another season in the Championship under Chris Davies.

Birmingham won promotion from League One the year before City, and Davies is continuing to build his staff and squad as they look to edge towards the play-off places after a season of consolidation. Fry’s expected arrival would add another specialist coach to the setup at St Andrew’s, with his recent work at Rangers having drawn praise in Scotland.

Rangers credited Fry with making an immediate impact on their work from dead-ball situations after he joined the club midway through last season. Rohl and several members of the first-team squad spoke positively about his influence on the training ground, particularly in attacking set-piece routines and chance creation from those moments.

Before his time at Lincoln, Fry spent more than seven years with Wolverhampton Wanderers, making a return to the Midlands a clearer choice. He worked as a goalkeeper coach from 2015 to 2019, before moving into a role as head of academy goalkeeping and under-23 goalkeeper coach. He then joined Lincoln in July 2022 as first-team goalkeeper coach, staying at Sincil Bank until his departure for Rangers in November 2025.

His exit from Rangers is part of a wider backroom change at Ibrox. Goalkeeper coach Sal Bibbo has also left, joining Frank Lampard at Coventry City, while McInnes has brought in Alan Archibald and Paul Sheerin from Hearts, along with Craig Clark from Kilmarnock.

For Fry, the move would bring a swift return to English football and a Championship role only eight months after leaving Lincoln. His time at Rangers appears to have been brief, but he now looks set to continue his work in specialist coaching with a Birmingham side preparing for a push towards a higher level.
