Championship Latest: West Ham In £17m Attacker Hunt, Southampton Join Midfielder Hunt

Southampton Join Justin Devenny Transfer Race

Southampton have entered the race to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Justin Devenny as they prepare for another Championship promotion push.

The Saints are looking at midfield reinforcements, with Shea Charles edging closer to a move to Leeds United. Charles was a key figure last season, and his departure would leave Southampton needing both numbers and quality in the middle of the pitch.

Devenny has now emerged as a possible replacement, with Southampton interested in the Northern Ireland international. Leicester City and Preston North End are also said to be in the race, with Leicester reportedly prepared to pay around £5 million.

The 22-year-old made 30 appearances for Crystal Palace in all competitions last season, although many of those came from the bench. He started seven Premier League matches, but has still built up useful top-flight experience and would represent a younger midfield option for any Championship club able to get a deal done.

Southampton’s interest comes after a difficult end to last season. They had reached the Championship play-off final on the pitch, but were removed from the play-offs following an investigation into the spying incident before their semi-final against Middlesbrough. That meant Middlesbrough progressed instead, and Southampton were left facing another season outside the Premier League.

Devenny would bring Premier League experience, international recognition and room for development. However, with several clubs circling, Southampton face competition if they are to turn their interest into a completed deal.
