Championship Latest: Wrexham Sanction Striker Exit, Southampton Join Premier League Attacker Hunt

Southampton Join Race For Aston Villa Forward Lewis Dobbin

Southampton have joined the race to sign Aston Villa forward Lewis Dobbin, with several Championship clubs now interested in the former Preston North End loanee.

The 23-year-old impressed during his loan at Preston last season, scoring 11 goals in 41 appearances. That form has brought further attention this summer, with Southampton now among the clubs pursuing him.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United have also been credited with interest. Sheffield United have been tracking Dobbin since the end of last season, while Middlesbrough are also looking at attacking additions as they plan for the new campaign.

Dobbin has yet to make a senior appearance for Aston Villa since joining from Everton in 2024. Another loan would be the fourth temporary move of his career, following spells with Derby County, West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End.

A permanent move appears less likely unless Aston Villa’s valuation, reported to be around £10m, is met. Southampton may yet have funds available if Shea Charles completes a summer exit, and the club’s need for attacking reinforcements has grown after the departure of Ross Stewart.

Cyle Larin has already joined permanently, but further movement in the forward line is possible. Leo Scienza could attract interest, while Ben Brereton Diaz’s future has also been described as uncertain.

Dobbin’s Championship record now stands at 12 goals and eight assists from 66 appearances, with last season at Preston by far his most productive campaign at senior level.
