Former West Bromwich Albion Striker Posts Emotional Departure Message

Former West Bromwich Albion forward Daryl Dike has spoken out for the first time since leaving the club in May.

Albion announced the departure of three first-team players when their retained list was released following the end of the 25/26 campaign, with Jed Wallace and Joe Wildsmith also departing the West Midlands outfit.

While Wallace has remained in the division with Bristol City, Dike has found no such luck yet in finding a new outfit.

Speaking for the first time following that decision two months ago, Dike was full of admiration for his former employers and their supporters.

Born in the US, the 26-year-old was a prolific forward in the States during his early years in the sport. His progression into college soccer initially came in reserve with the Virginia Cavaliers before forcing his way into their starting lineup. In his sophomore year, he continued his strong form by starting all 23 matches for Virginia, while winning a handful of awards.

It was therefore no surprise to see him sign for Orlando City in January 2020, further excelling to win the MLS Player of the Month later that year. He isn’t the first Championship forward to play for the Florida-based outfit, with Southampton and Canada attacker Cyle Larin also enjoying a hefty goal return for the MLS side earlier in his career. The Oklahoma-born man got his first taste of English football during a loan spell at Barnsley, impressing as the Tykes made the play-offs, but missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

The South Yorkshire side opted against a permanent deal for Dike, though his return to England was just around the corner. On the opening day of 2022, he signed a four and a half year contract with the Baggies, which is where his injury nightmares began. Achilles tendon injuries in both legs have seen him miss almost two years of that deal with Albion. During the rare times he was fit and firing, the 26-year-old showed shades of his potential, scoring seven times in 23 Championship appearances during the 22/23 campaign.

Reaction From Dike & West Brom Fans

In a heartfelt message on Twitter and Instagram, Dike’s emotional post included the following snippets:

“From the day I arrived in England, you were by my side, helping me live out a dream. Representing this club and wearing the Albion shirt was a privilege I never took for granted. From my first game to my last, your support never wavered.

“Unfortunately, my time here also coincided with some of the most difficult years of my life. Everyone knows how badly I wanted to succeed here. I gave everything I had every single day, and while not every story unfolds the way we hope, I leave with no regrets. This journey helped me grow not only as a player, but more importantly as a person.”

It’s clear to see from the comment section that he was well-loved during his time in the West Midlands, and there was a longing to see him feature more. However, his injury setbacks ultimately proved too much and devastated his time with West Brom. Hopefully, he will be able to prosper elsewhere if he can put a nightmare few years firmly behind him.
