Bolton Wanderers Manager Responds to Johnny Kenny Return Talk
Bolton Wanderers manager Steven Schumacher has refused to rule out a move for Celtic striker Johnny Kenny after being asked about a possible return for the Irish forward in the latest transfer update.
Kenny spent the second half of last season on loan with Bolton and scored six goals in 14 appearances as the club secured promotion through the League One play-offs. His impact has prompted speculation that the Championship newcomers could attempt to bring him back from Celtic this summer.
Schumacher declined to comment directly on any active negotiations, but made no attempt to conceal his admiration for the 23-year-old.
“I never do that, speak about things until stuff is done, but everyone knows what I feel about Johnny Kenny.”
“He was so good for us last year so I don’t need to hide away from that fact either. But we don’t comment on any individual until work’s done in any position.”
Kenny’s future at Celtic remains uncertain despite his successful spell in England. The Scottish champions have already strengthened their attacking department with the arrivals of Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh, the latter joining from Bodo/Glimt in a club-record deal reportedly worth £11 million plus add-ons.
Celtic are also continuing their pursuit of Paderborn midfielder Mika Baur and Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan, while their attempt to sign Brentford defender Benjamin Arthur permanently is reported to have been rejected.
Bolton’s interest in Kenny would therefore make sense for both parties. Schumacher already knows what the striker can offer, while Celtic’s summer recruitment may limit his opportunities in Glasgow. For now, Bolton are keeping their position guarded, but the manager’s words suggest the possibility remains very much alive.
