Boston United have added considerable Football League experience to their squad with the signing of veteran defender Niall Canavan.
The 35-year-old has joined the Pilgrims on a one-year contract following his departure from Barrow. Canavan captained the Bluebirds during the 2025/26 campaign, making 29 appearances in all competitions and scoring three times. He had spent four-and-a-half seasons at Holker Street, playing 182 games and becoming an important figure in their defence before the club’s relegation from League Two.
The centre-back brings more than 500 senior appearances to the Jakemans Community Stadium, the vast majority of which have come in the EFL. He began his professional career with Scunthorpe United, making his debut as a teenager during their time in the Championship.
Canavan went on to feature 173 times for the Iron in all competitions, scoring 16 goals. He was a key member of the side that won promotion from League Two in 2013/14, missing just one league fixture as Scunthorpe finished second behind Chesterfield.
His time at Glanford Park came to an end in 2016, initially through a loan move to Rochdale. That switch was later made permanent, and he spent another two seasons at Spotland before joining Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 2018.
Canavan made 92 appearances for Argyle and helped them win promotion from League Two during the curtailed 2019/20 season. He later returned to Bradford City, where he had spent part of his youth career, before moving to Barrow in January 2022.
Born in Leeds, the 6ft 4in defender represented the Republic of Ireland at under-21 level, winning seven caps between 2011 and 2012. His height, experience and leadership should offer Boston a significant presence at the back as they prepare for another National League campaign.
The Pilgrims have endured a busy summer as Paul Hurst reshapes the squad, and the arrival of Canavan provides them with a player who has spent almost his entire senior career in the Football League. At 35, he is approaching the latter stages of that career, but his record suggests Boston are acquiring someone capable of organising a defence and contributing across a long season. For a club looking to establish itself at National League level, that experience could prove particularly valuable.
