Middlesbrough are reportedly preparing to bank around £3 million from the departures of Delano Burgzorg and Kaly Sene as Kim Hellberg reshapes his squad.
Burgzorg is closing in on a permanent move to Preston North End, while Sene is expected to return to Switzerland with Young Boys after struggling to establish himself at the Riverside Stadium.
According to the latest report, Preston have agreed to pay £2 million for Burgzorg and the Dutch forward is due to complete a medical. They are also expected to receive approximately £1 million for Sene, bringing a swift end to the Senegalese attacker’s time on Teesside.
The double exit would create additional room in Hellberg’s squad following a busy start to the summer window. Boro have already strengthened their attacking options with the additions of Will Lankshear and Kyle Joseph, reducing the likelihood of regular football for either departing player.
Burgzorg joined Middlesbrough from Mainz in 2024 after scoring seven Championship goals during a season-long loan with Huddersfield Town. The 27-year-old went on to make more than 70 appearances for Boro, but he was unable to secure a consistent starting position and spent the second half of last season on loan with Bristol City.
Preston are now ready to offer him a permanent route away from the Riverside as they add further depth to their forward line ahead of the new campaign.
Sene’s spell in England appears set to last only 12 months. He arrived from Lausanne-Sport after an impressive period in Swiss football, having previously represented Basel, Omonia and Grasshopper Club Zurich. The 25-year-old made an encouraging start under former head coach Rob Edwards but slipped out of the picture following Hellberg’s arrival in November.
A summer departure had therefore been anticipated, with Young Boys now moving to bring him back to the Swiss Super League.
Their expected exits are part of a broader attempt to balance the Boro squad after further investment in new players. Goalkeeper Radek Vitek is also believed to be nearing a move from Manchester United, with additional arrivals potentially following before the transfer window closes.
While neither Burgzorg nor Sene became a regular under the current head coach, recovering a combined fee of around £3 million would provide Middlesbrough with useful flexibility. The deals would allow both forwards to pursue more regular football while clearing space and wages for players considered better suited to Hellberg’s plans.
