Reported Lincoln City coaching target Shaun Pearson has left his role as assistant head coach at Grimsby Town.
The Mariners have confirmed his departure, several weeks after it was reported that we were in negotiations over bringing the 37-year-old to Sincil Bank.
“We can confirm that Assistant Head Coach Shaun Pearson has departed the Club.
“Everyone at Grimsby Town would like to wish him and his family every success for the future.”
Sky Sports News reported at the end of June that the Imps were discussing a deal with Grimsby as we looked to add to the backroom team following promotion to the Championship. We have since appointed Paul McShane to our backroom staff, and there is currently no immediate suggestion we are recruiting for other positions, although you just never know.
Pearson has spent his entire coaching career with the Mariners, having moved into the backroom staff after retiring as a player in 2023. He had already been involved with scouting reports and academy coaching before taking up a permanent role with the first team, while he also had a brief spell in joint caretaker charge alongside Ben Davies in October 2023.
Pearson made more than 200 league appearances during his first spell at Blundell Park and helped the Mariners return to the Football League through the National League play-offs in 2016. He later spent four years with Wrexham before returning to Grimsby in 2021, playing a part in another promotion from the National League the following season.
His playing career also included spells with Spalding United, Stamford and Boston, while he returned to the Pilgrims on loan during the final campaign of his career.
Grimsby have enjoyed a decent pre-season, winning their cup final against us last week. However, David Artell will now find his backroom staff depleted just days before the Mariners kick off in the League Cup, and ten days before the new League Two season.
