6. David Matei

David Matei represents the longer-term option on this list.
The Universitatea Craiova midfielder only turned 20 in July, but has already accumulated more than 80 senior league appearances across spells with CSA Steaua București and Craiova. He also made 30 league appearances during his first season in Romania’s top division.
Matei possesses excellent technique, passes the ball confidently and displays unusual maturity for his age. He is comfortable receiving possession in crowded areas and already appears capable of dictating play against more experienced opponents.
The biggest question is whether he would be ready to start every week in the Championship. English football would represent a significant physical and tactical adjustment, particularly for a relatively small central midfielder still developing his game.
There is currently no obvious pressure on Craiova to sell and no widely reported offer on the table. That may make Matei more expensive than his experience would initially suggest, particularly because he is regarded as one of the leading under-21 players in Romania.
A Championship club signing him would need to treat the deal as both recruitment and development. Matei might require time, careful management and possibly a gradual introduction to the side, but he has the potential to progress beyond the Championship and eventually play in one of Europe’s major leagues.
