Derby Have Mowatt Bid Rejected
Derby County are trying to add significant Championship experience to their midfield, but West Bromwich Albion have rejected their opening offer for Alex Mowatt. John Eustace has been a long-term admirer of the 31-year-old, with Derby having also explored a move last summer, and they have now returned with a bid.
The offer is understood to have fallen below Albion’s valuation, although another approach is expected. Mowatt has made 170 appearances for the Baggies since arriving from Barnsley in 2021, with a season-long loan at Middlesbrough included during that period.
West Brom have strengthened their central midfield options this summer, which could potentially give James Morrison room to sanction a departure if Derby reach the required figure. Lewis Cox reports that negotiations have not ended with the rejection of the first approach:
“It is anticipated Derby will return with another bid as talks continue between the two parties.”
Derby finished eighth last season and clearly have ambitions beyond simply consolidating this time around. Mowatt would bring plenty of know-how to Eustace’s midfield, although West Brom appear determined not to let an important player leave cheaply.
