There is plenty happening across the Championship transfer market today, with Derby County and Preston North End both attempting to strengthen their squads before the window closes. Elsewhere, Birmingham City look to have been beaten to a striker they thought they were close to signing, while Bolton Wanderers have added another player with Championship experience.
Preston Push Beyond £2m for Oxford Star
Preston North End are pushing to sign Oxford United winger Stan Mills, with an offer worth more than £2 million reportedly now on the table. The 22-year-old was Oxford’s Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year last season, scoring three times and providing four assists despite their relegation from the Championship.
Mills missed their Carabao Cup defeat against Leyton Orient after being absent from training for part of last week. Preston have apparently been interested for several weeks, and the complicating factor for Oxford is their temporary transfer embargo, which would currently prevent them from replacing him.
Reporter Alan Nixon claims Paul Heckingbottom’s side are pushing hard to get the deal completed, with the two clubs discussing the price.
“Oxford may be ready to accept the Lancashire club’s offer and need the cash.”
That would leave Aaron Ramsey with an awkward early decision in his first permanent managerial job. Losing one of their standout players for a significant fee might make financial sense, but doing so while unable to bring in a replacement would hardly help their attempt to bounce straight back.
