Schumacher: Bolton Are “Nowhere Near” Finished
Bolton Wanderers may have started their Championship campaign with a win, but Steven Schumacher has made it clear that he still expects more business before the transfer window closes.
Wanderers beat Preston North End 2-1 on the opening weekend, with several summer additions involved, but Schumacher says the squad remains some distance from the finished product.
Speaking to the Bolton News, he said:
“We also know we have to strengthen with players who have experience, and we’re obviously going to have to strengthen further because I still don’t think we’re finished yet, and nowhere near the finished article of where we want to be as a squad.”
Bolton have already been active this summer, with Akin Famewo, Luca Stephenson, Kyliane Dong, Samuel Iling-Junior, Lewis Brunt and Ryan Hardie among those to make their competitive debuts against Preston. That recruitment has strengthened Schumacher’s options, particularly in attack, but he clearly feels more work is required if Wanderers are to establish themselves comfortably at Championship level.
“It gives the whole group confidence that if they stick together and they work as hard as they did and try and listen to the information, then we’ll compete at this level, and right now that’s what our main focus is, to compete in every game.”
The opening result will have given Bolton encouragement, but Schumacher’s comments suggest there could still be significant movement before the deadline as he looks to add further experience and depth to his squad.
