1931: Ted Savage, £2,500 (£151,750)
Destination: Liverpool
The next significant step came in May 1931, when Ted Savage left City to join Liverpool for £2,500. Born in Louth, Savage had played for Stewton before joining the Imps, and his move to Anfield pushed City’s record sale up by £850. It was a much healthier increase than the one which had preceded it, and also began an interesting thread in the club’s transfer history. Liverpool would eventually return to Lincoln for another record purchase, although supporters had to wait 74 years for that to happen.
Savage made his Liverpool debut in September 1931 and marked it in some style, scoring twice in a 4-0 First Division win against Grimsby Town after being deployed further forward than his usual wing-half role. Those proved to be his only goals for the club, but he still made 105 appearances before leaving for Manchester United during the 1937/38 season. His career subsequently took him to Wrexham, Carlisle United, West Ham United, Chelsea and Fulham, while he also appeared as a wartime guest for Millwall and York City.
After his playing days, Savage moved into management in the Netherlands with ZVV and Zeeburgia.
