Bournemouth manager Marco Rose has warned his players they must “take care” against Lincoln City, despite viewing the Carabao Cup as a realistic opportunity to win a trophy.
The Imps were handed a trip to the Premier League club in Wednesday night’s third-round draw, having earned their place with an impressive 4-1 victory against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.
It will be another away assignment for Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw’s side, but also an opportunity for City’s players to test themselves against top-flight opposition. Bournemouth will enter the competition at this stage because of their involvement in the Europa League.
Rose admitted that his immediate response to the draw was to find out more about Lincoln and where the city was situated.
“Of course, if you get the draw, you are looking, where is the city?” he told the Bournemouth Echo.
“It’s up north more.”
The geographical assessment may have been slightly vague, and pointless as we’re heading to them, but Rose was far clearer about the danger City could present. The Bournemouth boss acknowledged the unpredictable nature of knockout football and insisted his side would have to approach the tie properly.
“It’s a cup, so everything is possible. We talk about football, everything is possible and we need to take care.”
That warning represents a measure of respect for an Imps side that made 11 changes at Blackpool and still came through the second-round tie convincingly. The Cherries may also be tempted to make changes, given that Europe and the Premier League will likely take precedence. Unlike (for instance) Chelsea last season, they’re not laden with World Cup winners on the bench, which may help us out.
Bournemouth have been eliminated in the second round in each of the past two seasons. Starting in the third round this time means they have already gone one stage further, but Rose’s ambitions extend well beyond simply avoiding another early exit.
“But before, we have some other tasks to do and that’s why we are looking forward to starting this cup because it’s a chance to win a title.”
“That’s what we are going for. But before, again, we have some other tasks to do.”
Bournemouth will undoubtedly begin as strong favourites, particularly with the tie being played on the south coast. However, Rose’s comments suggest there will be no complacency from the Premier League club when Lincoln arrive.
The date and kick-off time have yet to be officially confirmed, although Tuesday 8 September currently appears to be the most likely slot for the tie.
