Lincoln City Linked With Move For Nations League International Hero

Lincoln City are reportedly interested in Oxford United defender Ciaron Brown, fresh from his two-goal performance in Northern Ireland’s Nations League victory over Ukraine.

The 28-year-old is being linked with a January move to the Imps by Alan Nixon’s Patreon, suggesting we are monitoring his situation alongside Sheffield United. Brown’s Oxford contract is reportedly due to expire next summer, potentially making the next transfer window an opportunity to secure an experienced Championship defender.

Brown began his career with Bedfont Sports and Wealdstone before joining Cardiff City following a successful trial in January 2018. He gained experience through loan spells at Livingston, making 34 appearances in all competitions, but played only 19 times for Cardiff before joining Oxford on loan in January 2022.

That move became permanent the following summer, and Brown won Oxford’s Player of the Year award in his first full season. He helped them secure promotion through the League One play-offs in 2024, then made 41 Championship appearances and scored four league goals in 2024/25, earning the individual award again.

He remained with Oxford following their relegation last season and signed contract extensions in October 2023 and June 2025. The report suggests his current agreement runs until the end of this campaign, although there is no suggestion at this stage that City have submitted an offer.

Internationally, the London-born defender qualifies for Northern Ireland through his Belfast-born mother. His introduction to the senior side came in September 2019, when he made his debut against Luxembourg just days after being called into the under-21 squad.

His latest appearance brought rather more attention. Brown scored twice in Northern Ireland’s 3-0 Nations League win over Ukraine, opening the scoring after nine minutes and adding another just after the hour to collect the Player of the Match award.

His second came when goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk failed to deal with his header, although Brown initially thought a teammate had supplied the finishing touch. Speaking afterwards, he said:

“If I’m going to talk you through the second (goal), I don’t have a clue. We’ve worked on set-pieces a lot and I’ve gone to flick it on.

“To be fair, big Ruairi [McConville] has done me a massive favour and left it. He’s a better guy than I am and I can only thank him.

“I thought Ruairi tapped it in, but I was just buzzing for the fact that we got another goal.”

Brown’s ability to play at centre-back or left-back would offer useful flexibility, and would ring true with our recent recruitment in that area. His contribution at attacking set-pieces is another attraction, while his experience and consistent selection at Oxford provide the stronger argument for a potential move.

However, the age doesn’t feel quite right if we had to pay a fee, and given we have a collection of players capable of playing in a back three, I do wonder if this is simply a case of him being on a list, rather than being an out-and-out target.
