August 2014: Nat Brown (8) Torquay United, 1-3
Duane Ofori-Acheampong flicked the ball against Nat Brown, and a handball decision left City facing more than 80 minutes with ten men. The assistant flagged the offence before Richard Wigglesworth awarded Torquay a free-kick and produced a straight red in the eighth minute. Arnaud Mendy dropped into defence alongside Tony Diagne as the Imps were forced into an early reshuffle.
For a while, Ben Tomlinson’s penalty offered hope that we might overcome the dismissal, the striker putting City ahead after Dale Tonge bundled him over. Ofori-Acheampong equalised before the break, however, and Torquay’s pressure eventually told in the second half. Courtney Richards fired them ahead after 62 minutes before Ofori-Acheampong finished a counter-attack ten minutes later to seal a 3-1 away win.
September 2014: Jordan Burrow (38) Macclesfield Town, 2-0
City had been in complete control until Jordan Burrow went in late on Adriano Moke in the 38th minute. Paul Rees produced a straight red for the striker, while Moke received a yellow for pushing him in retaliation. With a two-goal lead already established, the dismissal left the Imps facing more than half the match with ten men.
Those early goals proved enough, Tom Miller having drilled City ahead after nine minutes before Ben Tomlinson punished a defensive mix-up to double the advantage. Macclesfield couldn’t find a way back, with Nick Townsend making important saves and Hamza Bencherif blocking a late effort from former Imp Paul Turnbull. Delano Sam-Yorke earned a standing ovation for his work as the lone striker as City saw out a deserved 2-0 victory.
