Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy has confirmed Callum Robinson missed the draw at Middlesbrough after failing to meet internal squad standards.
Robinson’s absence came just four days after he scored in Cardiff’s 5-1 victory over Watford. His omission from the travelling squad was unrelated to injury, with Barry-Murphy confirming that the decision concerned requirements players must meet to be considered for selection.
Cardiff went ahead at the Riverside through Jack Moylan before Ollie Tanner doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time. Tommy Conway and Will Lankshear then scored three minutes apart after the interval, cancelling out the visitors’ lead.
Gabriel Osho’s dismissal in the 83rd minute left Cardiff defending the closing stages with ten men, but they secured a point to end four consecutive away defeats. The result also prevented Middlesbrough from completing another comeback victory.
Robinson has made just one Championship start this season, and nine league starts in total since Barry-Murphy took charge in June 2025. That follows a 2024-25 campaign in which the Republic of Ireland international finished as Cardiff’s leading scorer with 12 goals.

Barry-Murphy Keeps Details Private
Speaking to BBC Sport Wales, Barry-Murphy explained the selection decision while confirming Robinson had rejoined the group ahead of the Birmingham match.
“We have certain standards that all the players have to adhere to before they are considered for selection.
“Callum missed out on some of those before last Saturday so he wasn’t available. But he is back with us this week.”
The head coach declined to identify which requirements had been missed. He explained that the dressing room’s expectations would remain private, despite the public scrutiny surrounding team selection.
“The standards that we expect for the dressing room are internal.
“We’re always judged in public so that’s fine, but for the dressing room and how we work day by day it’s private for us.”
Pressed for further details, Barry-Murphy cautioned against assumptions about the circumstances. He linked the squad’s daily expectations to the qualities supporters should see during matches.
“I think it’d be wrong to presume [what the breach was]. The supporters want to see certain qualities in their team week to week.
“And we have to make sure that they remain the case day to day and then they have to be private. They have to be ours, for ourselves.”

Robinson’s return gives Cardiff another attacking option for the visit of Birmingham, which precedes fixtures against Wolves, West Ham United and Burnley. Barry-Murphy also spoke positively about the forward’s contribution and character.
“Callum is a great player. He’s been a great player for us and a great person so there’s no problem whatsoever.
“I’m very pleased to have him back in training this week.”
Barry-Murphy has explained the omission without making a private squad issue the subject of a public investigation. Robinson’s return allows attention to move back to his football, where his limited starts and recent goal against Watford provide a more useful measure of his position. With a demanding sequence of fixtures approaching, Cardiff need their available attacking options ready to contribute.
