I fear this one may not be up to us. There’s a thought that last season Shackell was earning in the region of £29k with Derby County, but that he’s come to Sincil Bank on less than £3k a week. That’s a big step down and something he might be willing to do for the experience, but not for a long while.
He’s married to an American and that could open the door to a lucrative spell in the States. If not, he’s surely going to be looking for another role in football and it has been suggested he’s come to Lincoln to learn from Danny and Nicky before taking up a role of his own.
He has a lot to offer a club in a playing capacity, even at 35-years-old. He’s shown himself to be a cut above the usual centre backs we’ve seen at Lincoln, even outshining some incredible players we’ve got right now. He’s as fit as anyone and is a player who has vastly improved our squad this season.
He’s played 31 games, 24 of those league starts and has bagged five goals. That’s not bad for a so-called veteran centre back.
If we can keep him, I’d be tempted with another year, but if the price goes up too much I think we’d be planning for a life without him.
