Thanks, no thanks: Peterborough United

No Thanks – Alex Woodyard

This won’t be as universally well-received as my no thanks, but I firmly believe there would be a place in our side even now for Alex Woodyard. Few can question his impact in our National League season, he was the unanimous Player of the Year and linked attack and defence superbly with his dogged running and infinite hard work.

His last six months were plagued by people talking about him trying to manufacture a move; he’d been spotted at Kenilworth Road allegedly and personal circumstances were making him seek a switch closer to home. Whether that was the case or not, he never let his performance levels drop.

I really liked Woody. He was friendly, always ready to have a chat with me and obviously a firm favourite of the manager at the time. I defend sideways passes to the hilt; we make them now and they’re important in the context of our play. I think his energy and tackling would fit alongside Joe Morrell and allow him to swap with Michael O’Connor as and when.

For that reason, I was angry with Peterborough for taking him from us.

  1. Gary, I went to the Barry Fry evening at the Theatre royal and he said that the only reason they let Anderson go was the current Manager at the time played the Diamond formation and had no room for Wingers but I know that Barry Fry Rates Anderson very highly and thinks he will play at an higher level.
