Derek Adams Returns To Plymouth In Director Of Football Role

Plymouth Argyle have brought back former manager Derek Adams as Director of Football, a structural move designed to support head coach Tom Cleverley and Head of Football Operations David Fox.

The Scot will oversee first-team strategy during a difficult League One run, with the club seeking stability and clearer recruitment direction ahead of the January window. Chairman Simon Hallett pointed to Adams’ deep knowledge of the club and the EFL as the driver behind the appointment.

“Derek is someone who knows Argyle well after a long period of time here as manager. He has extensive knowledge across all areas of the football pyramid in both England and Scotland and will provide valuable support to both David and Tom as we look to come through this challenging period.”

Adams’ previous spell at Home Park included promotion from League Two and a sustained period of competitiveness before relegation prompted his exit. Since then, he has weathered challenging situations at Morecambe, Bradford City and Ross County, building a reputation for resilience and resourcefulness.

The remit now is long-term direction, leaving Cleverley to focus on day-to-day performance and results. Full announcement: Plymouth Argyle.
