Cardiff City secure Ashford until 2030 as youth model strengthens
Cardiff City have confirmed forward Cian Ashford has signed a new contract running until the summer of 2030, reinforcing the long-term direction of the League One leaders.
The 21-year-old, who scored in Saturday’s 4-0 win at Doncaster Rovers, has made 38 appearances in all competitions this season, contributing five goals and three assists. A product of the academy since the age of six, Ashford’s extension continues a pattern of tying down young talent amid a tight promotion race.
Manager Brian Barry-Murphy framed the deal as part of a wider developmental vision.
“We’re really pleased that Cian sees his future here. He’s had a really good season, but the most impressive thing about him is that we’re now seeing exceptional improvement and growth.
“The players who have made so much progress and come through from such a young age at the Academy are the heartbeat. To keep them at Cardiff City is very important.”
There is further relevance to Cardiff’s academy operation this week.
Reports have linked Cardiff Under-21s boss Darren Purse with Birmingham City’s vacant Under-21 role, following Mark Kennedy’s departure. Purse, who returned to Cardiff in December 2021 to oversee the Under-21s and loans, has been credited with helping bring through several academy graduates now featuring in the first team.
For a club built heavily around youth progression this season, that outside interest underlines how closely their development work is being watched.
