Doncaster Rovers: Chimbonda’s blunt verdict on failed 2011-12 gamble
Pascal Chimbonda has described Doncaster’s 2011-12 recruitment experiment as “the worst group” he experienced, reflecting on the campaign via the Undr The Cosh podcast.
That season saw Rovers bring in a host of recognisable names on short-term deals in a bid to avoid Championship relegation. On paper, the squad looked strong. In reality, cohesion never materialised, and the club managed just eight league wins.
Chimbonda was candid about the disconnect between reputation and reality.
“On paper, it looked really good, like a Premier League team. But on the pitch…” “On paper, it’s good. But as a group, the worst group. If it had clicked together, we could have done a good thing there.”
He also admitted the relentless defeats were a shock after years in the Premier League.
“We got beat a lot man. I don’t think I’d ever been beat like this in my whole career, every week.” “When you’re losing every week, you go home and they say ‘what happened?’. ‘We got beat’. Next week, ‘oh, we got beat’.”
Doncaster were relegated that season, and while they have since rebuilt, the reflection stands as a reminder that assembling names does not guarantee a functioning team when the pressure mounts.
