Ali Smith

Maybe one day someone will explain what happened with Ali Smith. He came in under Mark Kennedy, played every game, including the Sheffield United upset and the West Ham tie, but never really settled. He was used as a sub a bit, didn’t get to play where we probably felt his best position was, and when Michael Skubala came in, he slipped down the pecking order.
He had two loans, one to Colchester and another to Wimbledon, both in League Two, and that seemed to be his level, but this season, after the Wombles’ promotion, he’s been excellent. He’s a key player for them, has bags of energy and looks to be every inch the player we thought he wasn’t going to become.
I’m not sure if he’d fit our team now, it’s hard to say as we didn’t see enough of him in a role that suited him, but he’s certainly proven himself a capable and cultured League One midfielder, something nobody saw coming on that early January trip to Blackpool where he was one of four players making their final City appearance.
