5. Crawley at home halted the slide when it had to
By March 2025, the mood had shifted in the wrong direction. Our form across a long stretch had been average, cup exits had stung, and the confidence generated by the previous campaign had begun to drain away. There was unease in the fanbase, and while there was still plenty of support for Skubala, there were also doubts beginning to surface more loudly than before.
This was seen as a game in which we could silence lingering relegation fears among some of the fanbase, which, given that we’d beaten Mansfield 3-0 and Peterborough 5-1 in the six weeks before, seems mad now. Then, we went 1-0 down against bottom four Crawley, a side that put four past us away from home.
That made the 4-1 win over absolutely critical. It was not merely three points against a struggling side; it was a release of pressure. City responded to going behind, played on the front foot and looked like themselves again. It steadied the conversation, pushed talk of trouble into the background and reminded everyone that the path under Skubala still had a direction, even if it had become harder to see for a while.
