Spalding United Promoted To National League After Play-Off Drama

Spalding United took the chance to complete a remarkable run for Lincolnshire sides as they faced Real Bedford in a play-off showdown at the Sir Halley Stewart Field, with a packed crowd ready to see if the Tulips could follow Lincoln City, Boston Town and Grantham Town in tasting success.

It was a tense opening, with both sides cautious in the early exchanges and chances at a premium, but once the game settled Real Bedford began to ask questions, forcing a smart save and delivering a series of dangerous balls into the box. Spalding weathered that spell and gradually grew into the contest, seeing a penalty shout waved away before creating openings of their own. Their pressure paid off in the 37th minute when Ceesay broke the deadlock, and they almost doubled the advantage soon after as confusion at the back caused panic, only for the visitors to scramble clear before the break.

The Tulips began the second half brightly and looked the more likely to add to their lead, but the game turned on a moment of quality as Stevens produced a fine solo effort to level things up. That goal lifted Real Bedford, who enjoyed their best spell of the match without finding a second, and just as Spalding started to regain control, they were hit with a late blow. With six minutes remaining, a move down the flank ended with Seychell converting from close range to put the visitors ahead.

It looked to have settled the tie, especially when Bedford spurned a chance to make it three, but Spalding refused to fold. Deep into stoppage time they forced their way forward and won a crucial penalty, which Jack Roberts converted with composure to send the home support into raptures and take the tie into extra time.

That late equaliser shifted the momentum completely. Spalding started extra time on the front foot and were rewarded almost immediately as Bart fired them back in front in the 93rd minute. Bedford tried to respond and came within inches of levelling again, only to see an effort cleared off the line, and from that moment the Tulips took control as tired legs began to show.

The decisive moment arrived in the 114th minute when Fowkes added a fourth, finally putting the outcome beyond doubt and sparking wild celebrations among the home faithful.

It was a match that had everything, drama, quality and no shortage of heart, and it confirmed Spalding’s place in the National League North for the first time in their history, another huge step forward for football in the county.
