Oxford United have joined the chase for former Lincoln City loanee Alex Mitchell, with the defender attracting fresh interest after another strong League One campaign.
The 24-year-old, who spent the 2023/24 season with the Imps, is understood to be on Oxford’s radar as they prepare for life back in League One, with Plymouth Argyle also keen to bring him back after his impressive loan spell at Home Park.
Oxford Enter Mitchell Race
According to Football League World, Oxford United have joined the hunt for his signature, with Plymouth Argyle also pushing to keep him after a season in which he became a key figure in Devon. Mitchell is currently a Charlton Athletic player, having joined the Addicks from Millwall in 2024, but his future appears uncertain as he enters the final year of his deal at The Valley.
The report suggests both Oxford and Plymouth are looking at a permanent move rather than another loan, which would make sense from Charlton’s point of view if they do not see him as part of their Championship plans. He has already proven himself at League One level with three different clubs, and that sort of defensive reliability tends to attract attention when the summer window begins to move.

Alex Mitchell At Lincoln City
Mitchell came through Millwall’s system before heading out for senior experience. He had time on loan at Bromley in 2021, then stepped into the EFL with Leyton Orient, where he made 26 league appearances across 2021/22. A move to St Johnstone followed in 2022/23, giving him regular top-flight football in Scotland and ending with the club’s Young Player of the Year award, before City secured him on a season-long loan in August 2023.
It did not take long for Mitchell to become a firm favourite at Sincil Bank. He made his debut from the bench in a 3-0 win against Blackpool on 26 August, soon established himself on the right of a back three or in a central pairing when needed, and scored his first Imps goal away at Fleetwood Town on 21 October.
Strong in the duel and composed enough in possession, he finished 2023/24 with 41 appearances and one goal in all competitions, while his October form earned him Lincoln’s Player of the Month award. Standing on a table in the Shakespeare beer garden after we lost to Portsmouth, waving a red flare in the air, probably helped his popularity, too.
In June 2024, he joined Charlton Athletic permanently on a three-year deal, making 31 league appearances and scoring twice in 2024/25 before moving to Plymouth Argyle on loan in August 2025.
