Last season, it is fair to say Lincoln City did pretty well when it came to the PFA free agent list, picking up Adam Reach, who went on to be a key player in our record-breaking squad.
This season’s first PFA squad has been announced, and as well as including a few familiar faces, I wondered if it had any players among the 39 who might interest Lincoln City? There are a few who won’t: John Marquis, Jack Vale and Mide Shodipo read like a who’s who of a darker past, but is there a Championship-level player lurking in amongst the former Truro City and Morecambe players?
Or this season, are we just going to have to look elsewhere late in the window?
Here are four players who might still have a career in the Championship: I say might because, honestly, it is slim pickings this season. Bear in mind that the team changes, and we may see players added over the course of the summer.
Niall Huggins
Huggins came through the Leeds United academy after joining from Heworth as a youngster, eventually making his senior debut in a Premier League defeat at Arsenal in February 2021. He joined Sunderland later that year and has since made 22 league appearances for the club, scoring his first professional goal in a 2-0 win against Watford in October 2023.
A Wales under-21 international who earned a first senior call-up in November 2023, the 25-year-old signed a contract extension at Sunderland in 2024 before joining Wycombe Wanderers on loan, where he had made 14 league appearances by March 2026.
Huggins is a right back, and I suspect that we’re covered there now. He’s got experience at the higher level, but his recent spell at Wycombe didn’t set the world alight.
