Deji Elerewe
When Deji signed, I was told he had a ‘Championship mentality’. Mentality is partly what got us where we needed to be last season, as some clubs had so-called better players than us, they had more money to spend on wages, and yet we ground out results. Our mentality was to refuse to lose, and even against Stevenage, with nothing really on the line, we still kept going, kept pushing, grinding out those results. That was our superpower last season, and so if we’re to do well this season, we need players with a good mentality.
Mentality alone is not enough for a player to thrive. Jake Sheridan had a good mentality, but you wouldn’t expect him in the Championship. So, if Deji has Championship mentality, he must also have something else the Championship needs. I think he does. He’s big, he’s clearly a physically impressive individual, but watching him on Saturday, he’s aware. Positionally, he is strong, operating quite wide against Boston. He’s quite quick as well, not ‘poo off a shovel’ quick, but with a speed that belies his size.
The big question is, does he replace Tom Hamer, or does Tom, the sixth player on this list of five and unlucky not to be included, keep him out?
