You know it’s a slow news day when a simple mention of Lincoln City gets an article, but I have been a fan of the Guardian Football Weekly podcast this summer.
I went on a show with Max Rushden and Barry Glendenning back in 2021, crouching in a shop doorway near Wembley ahead of the play-off final. I don’t normally listen, but during the World Cup, I wanted a podcast that was daily, and that was a bit of easy listening, under an hour, that I could enjoy on a run.
I expected some chatter about Spain this morning, maybe a bit about Trump trying to crash the presentation and Paredes trying to fight anyone he could, but I did not expect Lincoln City to pop up.
It started as a review of the World Cup Final halftime show, which I didn’t watch and would have no interest in at all. Max and Barry, along with guests, were giving their views, and highlighting Matt Le Tissier finding a conspiracy in there (obviously).
“I didn’t hate it, but then I would hate it to be in every football match. And I think if England were playing in the final, I would be like, ‘Fuck sake, lads’,” said Max, before the Imps popped up.
“I suspect if it’s Lincoln City against Reading in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, you might struggle to get that line,” added Barry Glendenning.
Half time entertainment at the Bank has been varied. We’ve had dance troupes, sumo wrestling, penalty shoot-outs, and all sorts. However, Max has just about nailed the typical half-time routine.
“It would be half an hour of just like middle-aged men in slippy shoes trying to score from the halfway line,” he added.
Not wanting to leave it alone, John Brewin, a respected freelance writer, editor and broadcaster, believes that the crowd at Lincoln might be a bit more discerning when it came to music at hald time.
“I think Sincil Bank would probably reject Justin Bieber,” he added. “They probably say the Lincoln Cathedral Choir could do a job. They’re better than Justin Bieber.”
Of course, he’s not wrong. That said, I have been lucky enough to witness music at half-time at Sincil Bank. I forget the year, but Bad Manners played at the ground once, and to promote tickets, Buster Bloodvessel performed ‘Lip Up, Fatty’ to the Stacey West Stand.
Now there is a half-time show I’d have loved to see. Buster Bloodvessel singing Lip Up, Fatty to Donald Trump, segueing into Corruption by Iggy Pop, and then finally, Loser by Beck. All the while, Omar Artan and Amir Ghalenoei stand silently with and banner that reads ‘Olvídate de las Malvinas: el fútbol pertenece al mundo, no al gilipollas naranja con cara de frailecillo ni a su lameculos calvo.’
I’d have tuned into that.
