Championship Latest: Sheffield United Eye Striker Deal, Birmingham City Prepare €3.5m Swoop

The Championship transfer market continues to gather pace as clubs work to reshape their squads ahead of the new season.

With the opening weekend drawing closer, movement is beginning to accelerate across the division. Several clubs are weighing up familiar targets, while others are attempting to move players on after difficult campaigns or changes in circumstance.

Sheffield United Considering Ben Brereton Diaz Return

Sheffield United are reportedly considering another move for Southampton forward Ben Brereton Diaz, with the Chile international facing an uncertain future at St Mary’s. The latest report suggests the Blades could approach their Championship rivals over a summer deal.

Brereton Diaz has returned to Southampton after spending last season on loan at Derby County, where he scored seven goals and contributed three assists. He also featured during the first half of Southampton’s recent 1-0 friendly victory against Eintracht Braunschweig, although there remain doubts over whether he will be part of their plans when the competitive campaign begins.

A move to Bramall Lane would represent familiar territory for the 27-year-old. He has already completed two separate loan spells with Sheffield United, joining them during the second half of both the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons. His record in the Championship could also make him an attractive option, with 64 goals and 26 assists across 270 appearances in the division.

Brereton Diaz joined Southampton from Villarreal in 2024, but has so far made only 15 appearances for the club and is yet to score. With Southampton potentially willing to reshape their attacking options, Sheffield United are understood to be assessing whether a third spell at Bramall Lane could be possible.
