There is plenty happening around the Championship and beyond as the new campaign approaches. Here are four stories catching the eye today, starting with another sizeable outlay being lined up at the Racecourse Ground.
Wrexham Agree £8m Goalkeeper Deal
Wrexham have reportedly agreed an £8m deal with Sunderland for goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
The 26-year-old has been given permission to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to the Racecourse Ground, with Wrexham hoping to have the transfer completed before their Championship opener against Cardiff City.
Patterson was part of the Sunderland side promoted to the Premier League in 2024/25, but lost his place following the arrival of Robin Roefs. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Millwall, making 17 appearances in all competitions, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding 15 goals.
The goalkeeper has extensive Championship experience and would appear to arrive as Phil Parkinson’s new number one. Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris previously defended Patterson when his performances came under scrutiny during their promotion campaign.
“It’s important to repeat that Anthony has been very consistent. It was the only goal of that game so the consequences were really important. But if you focus on the 34 games we’ve played with him, he’s been really good.”
The reported £8m fee would make Patterson one of the biggest signings in Wrexham’s history as they look to build on narrowly missing the play-offs last season.
