Lincoln City Fans Around The World: How Do They Get To Supporting The Imps?

Yael Murillo, Mexico

My name is Yael Murillo, I’m 33 years old and I live in Aguascalientes, Mexico, a town north of Mexico City, approximately a six-hour drive away.

I became a fan, or at least a prospective one, when I discovered Lincoln City on the Xbox video game FIFA 09. I liked the shirt colours, which are the same as those of my team in Mexico, and the old badge. According to one Lincoln City fan, that badge tends to bring back sad memories of 2011.

I used to look up information about Lincoln City once or twice a year. It was nothing serious, really, just things such as their league position. I actually found out about their relegation through FIFA, when the team no longer appeared in the game.

The same thing happened over the following years. I would check the National League standings a couple of times a year, I noticed we were wearing Nike shirts and I heard about Gary Simpson’s Jelly Babies, although I didn’t realise until last year that it had happened at Lincoln City.

In December 2016, I found out the team was leading the National League, but things became serious when the Imps drew at Portman Road in the FA Cup in January 2017. From then on, I never missed the match highlights on YouTube or Facebook.

The first Lincoln player who caught my eye was Matt Rhead. He was an unmistakable striker on the pitch. I think I connected with the team during that FA Cup run, and it was crazy to watch the quarter-final against Arsenal on television.

In December 2018, I travelled to England to watch Lincoln City play. It didn’t happen at Sincil Bank, but the travelling Imps were fantastic to me at the Lamex Stadium. They were amazed to see a Mexican who wanted to watch Lincoln City, while I was overwhelmed by the warm welcome they gave me.

That day, I met the Cowley brothers and most of the players from that squad, including Matt Rhead and Harry Anderson. I also met Alan Long, Graham Burrell and great fans such as David Smith, Michael Norton, Simon Mills and others. That remains my favourite memory since becoming a fan.

Following Lincoln City became easier once I discovered the service formerly known as iFollow. My matchday routine involves waking up on Saturdays just minutes before kick-off. For half of the year, the games begin at 8am, and for the other half they start at 9am, unless Sky in England plays a trick on me by scheduling them for 5.30am or 6.30am.

I usually watch Lincoln City matches alone, although since we have been living together, my wife has joined me for the games against Reading, Doncaster and Wycombe last April.

In Mexico, I support Chivas de Guadalajara, a club known for its red-and-white striped shirt and a philosophy similar to that of Athletic Bilbao, fielding only Mexican players. It is the most popular football team in Mexico and the United States.

My friends think my support for Lincoln City is crazy because, aside from the shirt, the two teams do not have much in common. That changes when they hear my story with Lincoln City and discover that the club even publicly supported me last year when we lost our baby.

I think what I love most about being an overseas Imps fan is that my posts in Spanish might catch the eye of somebody else who is interested in the club. Perhaps one day, Lincoln City will have the popularity of any Premier League team.
