Lincoln City’s reward for beating Crewe City and Bradford City in the opening rounds of the 2020/21 competition was a behind-closed-doors meeting with Premier League champions Liverpool at Sincil Bank. Jürgen Klopp named a powerful side and the gulf was brutally apparent during the first half, with Xherdan Shaqiri’s superb free-kick setting the visitors on their way to a 4-0 interval lead. Liverpool added a fifth immediately after the restart, leaving Michael Appleton’s side facing the possibility of an even heavier defeat.
Instead of retreating, City continued to play with the ambition which had characterised their impressive start to the season. Tayo Edun finished a well-worked move before Lewis Montsma headed home from a corner, while several further chances followed as the Imps found ways to trouble their illustrious opponents. Liverpool eventually won 7-2, but the hosts’ refusal to abandon their principles offered encouragement amid a chastening scoreline. The great regret was that supporters were absent, denying them the opportunity to witness Lincoln score twice against the reigning champions of England.
