Lincoln City And Premier League Opposition In The League Cup (Part Two)

2023/24 Sheffield Utd

0-0 (3-2 pens) (A)

Our 2023 trip to Bramall Lane delivered one of the club’s finest recent League Cup nights, as Mark Kennedy’s side eliminated Premier League Sheffield United. The Imps executed their game plan superbly, restricting the hosts to few clear opportunities while posing a threat of their own. Ethan Erhahon controlled the midfield, the defence stood firm and Reeco Hackett provided an energetic outlet, with the performance accompanied throughout by almost constant noise from around 3,000 travelling supporters.

Neither side could break the deadlock, but the 0-0 draw felt like a victory even before the resulting penalty shootout. Lukas Jensen then became City’s hero, consulting notes attached to his water bottle and making two saves as the tension rose in front of the away end. Lincoln held their nerve to win the shootout 3-2, earning a third-round home tie against West Ham United. It was not a fortunate smash-and-grab victory, but a disciplined and thoroughly deserved success against top-flight opposition.
