Marco Stergiopolous’s free kick

Marco Stergiopolous was a bit of a cult hero back in the early noughties, coming into Phil Stant’s side and adding an exotic twist to our workmanlike squad. His big moment came against Sheffield United on September 5, when many fans (maybe only me, but we’ll say many) remember him bending a terrific free kick in to win the game 1-0.
We’d lost the first game 6-1, so it didn’t matter, but Sterg’s moment of brilliance lit up the evening against a second tier side. Only, it didn’t. He did score, but it wasn’t a free kick at all. He did score a great free kick exactly a month earlier, in a 3-0 friendly win against Northampton Town. Funny what the memory does to you.
