Reading seems to have been rich hunting ground for us recently, Sean Long came on loan, swiftly followed by Rob Dickie last season. It seems there’s a relationship in place, so why not explore that further?
One player who we might be interested in is Sam Smith. He’s a 20-year old former Manchester United youth with limited first team experience for the Royals. He’s an attacker, tall and physical but, as you’d expect for a former Man Utd youth, he’s got some poise and grace too.
After signing his first professional contract with Reading in the summer of 2016, Smith spent a loan spell with Bishop’s Stortford before getting first some games in the Checkatrade Trophy. He broke through properly last season at the Madjeski signing a new deal with them in February 2018 and making eight appearances in total, four of which were Championship starts.
He scored twice for them last season, most recently as they slipped to a 3-2 defeat against Norwich, but he bagged regularly for the U23 squad, grabbing a hat trick in his last outing against Stoke U23s.
