It was widely believed we were one of the sides looking at Carl Winchester in the summer. he had been excellent for Cheltenham last season and would add a drive and bite to the midfield. It excited me, knowing we’d lost Alex Woodyard and needed a replacement.
Winchester hadn’t looked brilliant for Oldham when we beat them in the FA Cup, but with his League One experience he was a player I thought could seriously boost our promotion chances.
When he went to Forest Green I felt that pang of jealousy I got when the two Forest lads joined Mansfield. ‘Money talks’ was my initial thought, although with Winchester I suppose location did as much nattering as anything.
Even when Forest Green came to our place earlier in the season, I still felt we could have used him in our squad. Time has done me up like a kipper.
How could anyone else even contemplate breaking into our midfield now? Mark O’Hara has been brilliant, Tom Pett has completely reinvented himself from the winger we signed to a midfield dynamo and Lee Frecklington is just waiting in the wings. Michael O’Connor has been one of the players of the season and if we need him to, Bozzy will step forward.
Carl Winchester? Not anymore thanks, no.
