Lucas Akins Returns to Mansfield Squad After Prison Release

Mansfield Town have confirmed that forward Lucas Akins has been reintegrated into the first-team squad following his release from prison.

The 36-year-old served half of a 14-month sentence after causing the death of cyclist Adrian Daniel by careless or inconsiderate driving in March 2022. The incident occurred when Akins pulled out from a junction without stopping at a give-way sign.

In a club statement, Mansfield said they believed in the principles of rehabilitation and reintegration, adding that Akins had shown deep remorse for the tragedy.

“Lucas has reiterated his profound remorse for the events of that day and fully recognises the enduring impact this tragedy has had on the family of Mr Daniel,” the club wrote.

The Stags also extended their condolences to Daniel’s family and confirmed they would continue to support Akins as he returns to the professional environment.

Personally, I think this is the right decision. The wrong decision was to play him after his arrest, and before his trial. Any man who has served his time is surely owed a chance to start afresh, even if the optics for the club are not great.
